The ability to give to others is a gift in itself. If you can give away food, then you’re probably not hungry. If you can give away clothes, you probably don’t have to worry about being cold this winter. And if you direct a foundation supported by some of St. Louis’ most successful corporations and individuals, then you can reach kids across a region of 2.5 million people.
That’s what the Sports Commission is trying to do for kids in East St. Louis. We did what we could to help during a teachers strike which lasted all of October. We will continue to do what we can now that the strike is over, because the need is not over. The strike was traumatic for kids and the recovery will take time.
On the other hand, us do-gooders need more than resolve. We need fuel, but not necessarily in the form of money or medals. Those who try to affect positive change for kids need to know they are making a difference. Such proof landed in my mailbox yesterday. Check this out:
Christian Activity Center (CAC) is one of the fantastic organizations we are able to support and this card made my day. This type of thank-you has a much bigger impact than a form letter. Even if the kids’ handwriting and grammar aren’t perfect, it means a ton coming directly from them.
As I wrote earlier, we continue to help kids in East St. Louis and if you are so inclined, your help is welcomed and appreciated. Please click here to donate and be sure to write East St. Louis Kids in the comments section. It’s amazing what we can do when we do what we can.
