Diego Maradona talks too much. Argentina’s current soccer coach and all-time greatest player went too far in an interview on Wednesday. He and Pele, a man widely considered to be the greatest soccer player of all time have exchanged words recently. Pele criticized Maradona’s coaching. Maradona responded, “Pele has to go back to the museum.” This is a clear insult to soccer’s greatest ambassador and the road he paved for players like Maradona.
Pele is 20 years Maradona’s senior, hence the age comment. Nonetheless, Maradona’s statement provides a clear lesson to us all. Respect your elders. It could be your mom, dad, coach, or just someone who has been down the path of life you are traveling. They deserve your respect. I know, sometimes our elders don’t soften the blow, they just throw it. I have learned over time that more often than not, they mean us well. Many times our egos won’t let us take in the lessons they try to teach.
My mom used to say that a hard head makes a soft behind (and she didn’t say behind.) The more a person refuses to learn or take sound advice, the easier it becomes to take them down. We often hear that the greatest athletes are also the greatest students. So, take a knee and listen good. Until next time…
